The number one "diagnosis" people ask me about is PCS. Concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI's) are so common and most people, even many clinicians, assume that if concussion symptoms persist past an acute period, usually a few days or weeks, that it must be PCS. Although PCS certainly does exist for a certain population, usually with a history of neurological vulnerability, I see the the term PCS improperly used every day, used as a "catch-all" diagnosis, which often serves to over-medicalize a persons condition, to the patients detriment. How can we recommend the proper treatment if we are not understanding the real reason for symptom persistence? This article highlights the importance of understanding how other factors, such as mental health, can contribute to symptom chronicity post concussion. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22935025/
