CORRENE DE CARLO, PH.D., C.PSYCH.

Dr. Dr. De Carlo has worked in private practice since 2016 and is proud to be the founding psychologist and director of the C2 Centre for Brain Health. While the clinic has its roots in the latest research in cognitive neuroscience, rehabilitation and psychological therapy, its name (C2; Cerebral Cortex) and practice are both personally and professionally meaningful to Dr. De Carlo. Although a biologist first by training, having completed undergraduate and Master’s degrees in the biological sciences, with special interests in neurobiology and immunology, she followed her passion for the practical applications of neuroscience and later pursued additional graduate training in clinical neuropsychology. She earned her Ph.D. in clinical neuropsychology from the University of Victoria, a renowned school for neuropsychology training in North America. Throughout her training she was awarded multiple institutional and national scholarships for her masters and doctoral research in the areas of cancer, aging, and cognitive-impairment, with her research recognized by the International Neuropsychological Society with a Phillip M. Rennick Award. Her pre-doctoral clinical internship was completed in Calgary in clinical psychology and clinical neuropsychology, which is where her career in private practice began. She subsequently completed an American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABCN) recognized two-year post-doctoral fellowship in clinical neuropsychology, which consisted of assessment work for a wide variety of adult and older adult populations, including interventions in an outpatient rehabilitation centre. As a clinician, Dr. De Carlo has trained and worked with adults and older adults in private practice, community clinics, rehabilitation centres as well as in acute care and outpatient hospital settings. She has experience working with a wide range of clinical presentations in both assessment and treatment contexts, ranging from the worried well to individuals with mental health challenges, acquired and traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. De Carlo is native to Simcoe County, with extensive family and social connections in the area; following completion of her doctoral and post-doctoral work in British Columbia and Alberta, Dr. De Carlo moved back to Simcoe County and is now a clinical neuropsychologist fully licensed to practice in Ontario with practice in the fields of clinical psychology and clinical neuropsychology. Not only is the C2 Centre for Brain Health fulfilling a local need for doctoral level clinical services in the areas of clinical psychology and neuropsychology, Dr. De Carlo offers a unique approach to assessment and intervention services owing to her background training in biology, immunology and extensive research experiences to ensure approaches are strongly rooted in empirical findings. Further, her warm approach to assessments owing to her extensive therapeutic training, provides a supportive and compassionate platform for all types of assessment needs.
From an assessment perspective, Dr. De Carlo commonly completes independent psychological and neuropsychological evaluations for individuals to inform treatment options, as well as for disability and insurance claims and in medical-legal settings. Additional areas of interest includes concussion assessments, and fitness for duty evaluations. As a therapist, her approach to treatment is informed by the latest research in the neurological sciences, rehabilitation and psychological therapy. Dr. De Carlo utilizes a client-entered approach and works within a cognitive behavioural framework, incorporating additional evidence-based interventions, such as cognitive processing therapy, schema therapy and mindfulness-based approaches when appropriate. Dr. De Carlo’s therapeutic focus is to broadly to facilitate client awareness of vulnerabilities, restructure maladaptive thinking patterns, and strengthen adaptive coping strategies all within an empathic and compassionate framework so that clients can obtain the support they need in order to optimally manage their symptoms and improve their life quality.
Dr. De Carlo has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed research publications relevant to her clinical practice. She continues to contribute to the scientific literature in the field of cognitive aging, attends national and international conferences and presents research findings pertaining to healthy cognitive aging for community groups / agencies. Dr. De Carlo is a full member in good standing with the College of Ontario Psychologists, the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), and the National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN). She is a registered provider with WSIB under the Community Mental Health Program.
