This article highlights the real concern with the impact of COVID-19 not just on the respiratory system but on other organs, and notably the brain; from inflammation to hypoxia, although the mechanisms may vary and remain unclear for some time, cognitive dysfunction secondary to COVID-19 is very real for many. Although we have long known that viral infections can wreak havok on the brain (e.g., herpes simplex virus), if some individuals are left with lingering neurocognitive deficits because of COVID-19 infection, what will be the impact on our health care system long-after COVID-19 reaches endemic status? Although the host of symptoms and symptom trajectory are poorly understood in long COVID, it is clear that neuropsychologists will play a role in characterizing the neurocognitive impact of long COVID on patients now and into the future.
